Assistant Preschool Teacher 

Established in 1955, Village Preschool has a rich history as a cooperative play school. Our school was created by parents in Southwest Portland who came together to form a community where their children could grow and play together and parents could maintain meaningful involvement in their children’s early learning.  

Our intent at Village Preschool is to help each child become their most authentic self. Rules are enforced without rewarding, punishing or praising, and we believe active family involvement, a strong parent education program, and continual school-home communication to be essential to growth. We look forward to welcoming an Assistant Teacher who will work collaboratively to continue this mission. 

Assistant Teacher 

Village Preschool is looking for an Assistant Teacher who loves working with children and families, and is familiar with the co-op model and play-based early education.

Hours: 8:30am-12:15 pm Monday-​Thursday and 8:30am-1:15pm Friday. The Assistant Teacher also attends occasional member meetings and meets weekly with the Lead Teacher.

Job responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to implement play-based curriculum and co-lead activities

  • Support with setting up the classroom for daily activities 

  • Support Lead Teacher with classroom management

  • Work alongside family classroom helpers and provide guidance as needed

  • Supervise children during playground time

  • Provide additional support for individual children as needed

  • Engage and communicate with parents on a daily basis in a collaborative environment

  • Serve as substitute Lead Teacher as needed

The ideal candidate will:  

  • Have an Associate’s degree in early childhood education/child development or relevant experience

  • Have at least two years’ experience working with preschoolers in a group setting 

  • Be able to work cooperatively with parents and the Lead Teacher 

  • Have experience developing and implementing a play-based preschool curriculum 

Requirements: Enrollment in the Central Background Registry, RRCAN, a Food Handlers Permit, and Infant and Child CPR/First Aid certifications. This job may occasionally require lifting up to 30 pounds.
